Come Back to Me
Chapter one – The strings may be broken but they can always be retied.
He could feel his heart threatening to break out of his chest with every step he took towards her door. It was only an hour until the ceremony but he couldn’t help but want to take her into his arms right away. Finally, the day in which his dreams would come true was finally here.
“Kelsey?” he knocked softly on the door with a smile on her door when he thought about the shy face that must have graced her face when he had come so suddenly. She should have known, anyways, he told her he hadn’t intended to be a gentleman once they got married. He waited too long for that.
When no answer came, he pushed the door open only to meet the empty with the freezing wind blowing at his face. The lights were off but he could tell that the dress was still draped on the mannequin, pure white and untouched. His eyes searched the room, hoping that it was all a lie, that she was simply playing around with him and hiding in the closet. But when his breathless call of her name was met with silence, he found the letter.
Down in the main ball room, Anik Kadam announced that due to an unfortunate circumstance that he was not at liberty to discuss, the wedding will not proceed and that the party over. The guests looked around and knew what the reason was when they couldn’t find him mingling in the crowd. He had left hours ago, they whispered, no doubt to take the bride away with him. The ballroom was empty when Anik came out of the kitchen, finally done putting everything away. Hours of his hard work had gone to waste, but he was not going to complain after what he had just learned.
His friend was not the only one heartbroken. He was also blindsided as well to learn what Kelsey had done. He went upstairs and his breath hitched when he saw a stream of light spilling out of the study’s slightly opened doors. Brandishing a sword he had taken off the wall, he tiptoed to the door and before he could look inside, a voice greeted him, “I’m a friend, Anik.”
